Black Girls Shred Official Statement June 3, 2023
Nicole Humphrey, co-founder of the non-profit organization Black Girls Skate, has taken a significant step forward in her mission to empower and support the Black community. In June of 2022, with the support of local Los Angeles organizers, she established Black Girls Shred.
Through several months of conflict mediation, issues were raised which ultimately led to the resignation of several teammates and board members. After two years of serving as Chief Marketing Officer and contributing to the development of marketing and programming initiatives at Black Girls Skate, Nicole made the difficult decision to leave the organization.
Founded on June 19, 2022, Black Girls Shred is a community-driven non-profit organization dedicated to promoting safety practices, health education, resource mobilization, equity, and the creation of skate spaces for youth and young adult shredders aged 18 to 30. Our focus lies specifically on the Black community and their Indigenous and People of Color (IPOC) peers, providing support for shredders of all styles and skill levels across various action sports such as skateboarding, roller skating, biking, surfing, figure skating, snowboarding, and more. We work collaboratively with the community, with a deliberate emphasis on centering the experiences of women, LGBTQIA individuals, and gender non-conforming individuals (GNC).
Our initiatives extend beyond geographical boundaries, connecting Black, African, and Indigenous peoples who are dedicated to fostering and preserving safe spaces. At Black Girls Shred, we prioritize the holistic well-being of individuals, focusing on their mental, physical, and emotional wellness. We approach our work with a restorative mindset, acknowledging the importance of healing and growth.
As we strive to garner support for our cause, we are prioritizing internal accountability. We are taking the necessary time to ensure that our leadership is community-centered, and our administrative processes align with the legal requirements for a non-profit organization.
